Talk: Social Inequality Has Changed Over Time

The professor’s research shows that social inequality has changed over time. This can be explained by a range of possible mechanisms, which were explored in the center's latest talk.

Full House for the Talk

Once again, the Centre for Childhood Health hosted a highly successful talk. All seats were taken by curious individuals, researchers, and professionals.

On Wednesday, November 27th, the center presented two renowned researchers in the field of social inequality in health and obesity: Professor David Bann from UCL, who gave the presentation "Social Inequalities in Obesity: Trends, Issues, and Opportunities", and Professor Emeritus Finn Diderichsen from the University of Copenhagen, with the talk "Inequalities in Childhood Obesity - Mechanisms and Drivers".

David Bann was later interviewed, where he pointed out:

"Much of my work documents social inequality and shows that it actually exists. It also demonstrates how it has changed over time."

The purpose of the center's talks is to deepen our understanding of the latest knowledge in our field. We invite researchers and practitioners from both Denmark and abroad to share their research on health promotion and the prevention of high weight and poor wellbeing in children and adolescents.

Social Inequality Among Children and Adolescents

There are many mechanisms at play that can explain the social inequality that David Bann highlights. With his expertise in epidemiology, prevention, and health promotion, Finn Diderichsen was a natural choice to place social inequality in the context of children's and adolescents' health.

"Early and difficult experiences among children have a surprisingly large effect and contribute significantly to social inequality," he explained after his talk and a longer debate between the audience and the speakers.

The many mechanisms that help explain social inequality in health and obesity among children and adolescents can be found in this fact sheet, which was created by Børnevægt i Balance.
