Survey of mission-driven organisations

The project will explore how research centres and similar organisations can contribute to solving societal challenges. The project will follow Centre for Childhood Health

The project will explore how mission-driven research centres can achieve their goals most effectively and how governance and leadership support this process. The primary focus of the survey is Centre for Childhood Health.

The aim is to create new knowledge and compare the Centre's activities and governance with other similar centres. The project draws on literature in mission-driven research and innovation as well as governance and management of public organisations.

Background to the survey

More knowledge is needed about how mission-driven organisations work and the role of leadership and governance. There is also a lack of knowledge on how to steer research towards specific societal goals. Key questions include how funded research may be governed, whether research should be governed, how stakeholders can get engaged around a common mission, and how research can lead to implementation of solutions.

Centre for Childhood Health has a number of special characteristics that make it worth following:

  • Firstly, the Centre was founded by both a private foundation, the Novo Nordisk Foundation, and a governmental authority, the Ministry of the Interior and Health. This construct is quite unique and relevant to study from a leadership and governance perspective.
  • Secondly, the Centre includes both internal researchers and also funds external research, pilot trials and implementation activities. Other centres or programmes typically either do all the work themselves or fund all projects externally.
  • Thirdly, the Centre's activities essentially span the entire 'value chain' of new solutions, from research to implementation. It is typically developed in different institutions.
