Purpose

Centre for Childhood Health is launching a call for expression of interest for “New norms for the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire”.

This is the first in a two-stage process. The purpose of this first stage is to identify potential candidates for executing the specific task. The expression of interest must include the applicants’ motivation and a description of the expertise relevant for the purposes of the activity.

In the second stage selected applicants will be invited to submit a full application.

Background

The Strengths- and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is a 25-item questionnaire used to assess socio-emotional skills in children and adolescents aged 2-17 years. In Autumn 2023, the Danish Health authorities released a report titled "Mental distress and early indications of mental disorder in children and teenagers." This report proposes the use of the SDQ as a primary screening tool to detect signs of psychological distress in children and young adolescents. However, there are indications that the current available norms are not representative suggested by too narrow scoring bands, which may lead to misclassification of some children and adolescence in need of support.

The Centre for Childhood Health therefore wishes to support the development of new representative norms for all versions of the Danish Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). This includes norms for different age-groups as well as for child-, parent- and teacher/pedagogue-reported versions of the SDQ.

We strongly encourage collaboration and data sharing across research environments. Also, we may suggest combining complimentary proposals.
